I hit the mother lode...

...with my wonderful Mom ;)

In honor of Mother's Day coming up, I wanted to throw back to something I shared around this time last year. May I present to you, a little story about my roots:

When my mom was 35 years old(and I was just 10), she and my dad opened the original form of this ever-evolving family business: Busy Bodies Fitness Center.

A "die hard fitness freak", as she would call herself (see the newspaper article below for proof), my mom was a pioneer of fun fitness. Her routines were creative, effective, and ahead of her time (we're pretty sure she invented Tae Bo).

When I was in high school, she took me to my first-ever yoga class at a hot yoga studio in San Antonio. She had heard you could burn a lot of calories sweating your buns off, so we signed up one summer.

My mom loved the practice and continued to go regularly. I, on the other hand, accompanied her on the occasion that I had 5 free hours (the class was only an hour and a half, but it took me another 3 and a half to recover afterwards).

Thinking of that experience reminds me of the time we ran the Disney Half Marathon together, right before I started managing Family Fitness back in 2010. Mom, you recently asked me to find the article I wrote about it. And I did! Click here to go read it.

So, a big shout out and a HUGE thank you to my Mom (you may know her as Sarah), for opening the doors of wellness to our community, for opening the doors of yoga to me, and for giving me a chance to hand craft it all myself.

Here she is on the *front page* back in June of 1997:

Thanks again, Mom. I (quite literally) would not be here without you.

Another special day coming up...

Maybe you can sign your favorite mother up for a nap! Join me on Wednesday, May 24, from 1 to 1:45 pm (right after the Noon class) for a Yoga Nidra session.

For just $5, enjoy the ultimate integration: conscious sleep. A systematic surrender where your body remains quiet and still(as though you were sleeping) but your mind stays tethered to a guide.

This practice is perfect for you if you've been struggling with anxiety, stress and/or sleeplessness. Recent research has proven Yoga Nidra to be a low-risk treatment for insomnia and stress.

The photo below was taken last week during our garden yoga class (thanks, Hana!). Winnie wants you to know that there is always a cool place to chill at Spring Creek Garden Center!

Come on out this Wednesday for garden yoga from 5:30 to 6:25 pm. This all-levels class is just $10 for drop ins, or you can use a pass from your Hand Craft Yoga class pack.

If you're a monthly Hand Craft Yoga member, be sure to take advantage of your 1 free garden class pass per month (and only $5 for each additional garden class pass).

Turn it into a very happy hour if you'd like: wine/beer are available to purchase for 30 minutes after class. We might be outside on the lawn or inside the Gathering Haus...can you join me on Wednesday for yoga at Spring Creek Garden Center?

I look forward to seeing you soon!

With love,

Monica

Sign up for good vibes this weekend! Prepare to bliss out at Hand Craft Yoga studio this Saturday with our once-a-month all-level yoga class from 9:30 to 10:30 am, followed by a sound bath with Cherie from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Come for one, or stay for both! Essentially, a sound bath is a meditative experience designed to “bathe” listeners in sound waves, using several instruments to create soothing, overlapping vibrations. It is possible that these vibrations could lead you deeper into a state...

...but we tried to have fun anyway! The retreat this past weekend (at Lake LBJ) was a huge success! Our group had a great time... full of playfulness, gratitude, nourishment, connection, and beauty. It is unanimous...we can't wait to do it again! Here is a glimpse at some of the highlight moments from our second annual Lakeside Yoga Retreat: Don't worry, we have another one coming up! The next retreat won't be on a lake, but it will have many fun activities, amazing people, and delicious food...

So long, summer! Can you be-leaf it’s already almost fall? This Sunday, Sept 22, is the second time of the year that daytime and darkness are equal. This “Autumnal Equinox” marks the point at which nighttime gradually starts to outlast the day as we enter fall and move toward the darker seasons. In the spirit of the seasonal shift, practice finding your Equinox Breath. Slowly and patiently allow your breath to calibrate to equal part inhale, equal part exhale. Consider counting to stay...
