Why do we call it Leap Day?

Published 2 months ago • 2 min read

Leap Day, or February 29th, is a unique day that only occurs every four years. But why do we call it leap day? The reason behind this name is that it essentially "leaps" over a day in the calendar, making up for the fact that the Earth's orbit around the sun takes approximately 365.25 days.

By adding an extra day to the calendar every four years, we keep our calendar year aligned with the astronomical year. This adjustment helps prevent the seasons from shifting over time and ensures that our calendars stay accurate.

This may be a bit of a stretch(er...leap?), but I am seeing parallels between honoring leap day and the practice of yoga. We observe patterns and make adjustments to find alignment, balance, and harmony with our natural surroundings. We make space.

This Thursday, celebrate this "bonus day" by giving yourself permission to take a leap!

Thanks to all who took a leap with us last week!

The retreat this past week (at Lake Atitlan, Guatemala) was a huge success! Our group had a great time... full of adventure, nature, shopping, fun, and connection.

It is fairly unanimous...we can't wait to do it again! Here is a quick glimpse at some of the highlight moments from our first International Yoga Retreat:

Treat yourself to a mini-retreat this Saturday

Sign up for our once-a-month Saturday morning yoga class from 9:30 to 10:30 am on March 2. For the ultimate bliss-out combo, plan to stay and enjoy a Sound Bath with Cherie Sisneros from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Essentially, a sound bath is a restful, meditative experience designed to “bathe” listeners in sound waves, using several instruments to create soothing, overlapping vibrations.

It is possible that these vibrations could lead you deeper into a state of contemplation or relaxation, soothing the nervous system. There is only one way to find out!

While this class is located at Hand Craft Yoga studio, it is a separate class from my membership/passes. The sound bath is normally $20, but Cherie is giving a discount to Hand Craft yoga students! It will be $15 each, and you can pay her when you come to class.

Winnie wants you to mark your calendar

For next week's book club meeting! Have you been reading Remarkably Bright Creatures? Are you planning to come to the official snack and chat on Thursday, March 7 from 12 to 1:45 pm?

If you answered yes to both of those questions, do you feel inspired, willing, and able to bring a snack contribution to the gathering? If that was also a yes, please click the button below to sign up and let us know what you're planning to bring.

Whether we leap or March, let's keep moving forward through these last few weeks of winter.

With love,

Monica

I've been pondering... This picture is from our studio pond after class this past Saturday. It had me thinking... Even though the same growing conditions seem to be present(same water to grow in, same exposure to light, same fish mingling around the stems beneath the surface), each lily has its own timeline to bloom. Our human experience is no different. From the way we move our bodies, to what we enjoy about a book, to simply living daily life...this one-size-fits-all looks different for...

I've been reflecting... Every so often, I take a walk through the garden of my mind to check on the plants I've been growing. I enjoy revisiting my old journals, newsletters, and notepads to refresh my memory on the ideas I was trying to cultivate. Today, I read a newsletter from last April where I announced plans for upcoming retreats. Just for fun, stroll down memory lane with me... I copied and pasted the content below: "I have officially planted the seed for 2 big ideas: First, a 3-4 day...
